Chicago Ramp Work. Clear Coordination.

Cushing Transportation, Inc. moves containers off Chicago's rail ramps: across town to another railroad's ramp, and out to the warehouses and docks waiting for them. Owner operators based in Chicago and Joliet run the moves, and one dispatch desk answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Two Ways We Move a Container

Cushing Transportation, Inc. provides two services from Chicago's rail ramps: crosstown moves between ramps and inland yards, and intermodal drayage from the ramp to the customer's dock and back. Owner operators based in Chicago and Joliet run the moves, and one dispatch desk answers 24 hours a day.

Crosstown Services

Chicago is where the eastern and western railroads meet, and plenty of containers change railroads here on a truck. A crosstown move is that truck leg: from one Chicago rail ramp to another, or between a ramp and an inland yard.

  • Ramp to ramp across Chicago, from one railroad's terminal to another's
  • Ramp to an inland yard, and back to the ramp
  • 20, 40, 45 and 53 foot containers
  • Gate hours planned at both ends of the move

Intermodal Drayage

Drayage is the truck leg between the ramp and the customer. We pull the container at the ramp, deliver it to the customer's warehouse or dock with the appointment held, and bring the empty back with the paperwork.

  • Ramp to warehouse, and the empty back to the ramp
  • Deliveries to the warehouses of the Joliet corridor, around Elwood and Joliet
  • Dry containers on our own chassis: 20, 40, 45 and 53 foot
  • 53 foot domestic containers and rail trailers
  • The last free day watched by dispatch
  • Scheduled lanes: tell dispatch the lane and the volume

The Ramps Behind the Work

These are the railroads' terminals, not ours: we do not own or run them, we pull containers from them. Our dispatch records list 15 Chicago area ramps on six railroads.

Service Questions, Answered.

What services does Cushing provide?

Two: crosstown services, container moves between Chicago rail ramps or between a ramp and an inland yard, and intermodal drayage, the truck leg from a rail ramp or marine terminal to the customer's warehouse or dock and the empty back. Both run from Chicago and Joliet with dispatch available 24/7.

Which service is my move?

If the container goes to another railroad's ramp or to an inland yard, it is a crosstown move. If it goes to your warehouse or dock, it is intermodal drayage. When in doubt, send the details and dispatch sorts it.

Does Cushing haul hazardous materials?

Cushing is registered with PHMSA for hazardous materials; the registration is on the Documents and Forms page. Tell dispatch when a load is hazmat, with the class and the paperwork, before it is tendered.

What should I send with a load?

The container, its size and type, the pickup ramp, the delivery address, the weight, the dates. Email workorders@cushingtrans.com or call 708.656.5050; dispatch confirms acceptance, capacity and timing with you.
